An affordable home must be equal to (or more than) 300 sq ft carpet area. Today the lowest cost of MHADA tenement is Rs. 10,000\/sq ft. Thus the MHADA cost of a 300 sq ft basic unit would cost Rs. 30 lakh (and that too, far away). One out of every eight slumdwellers who has been given a free flat under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme (SRS) has sold the place and moved out, found the SRA so far in its survey being carried out on Bombay HC\u2019s orders. Of the 86,429 tenements surveyed, 10,983 were found to be occupied by unauthorised occupants.<\/p>\n

Even as the state government is pushing for the redevelopment of slums, a recent SRA review report has revealed that as many as 533 such projects are either stuck or have been shelved since 2005. According to SRA estimates, more than lakh slumdwellers have been affected by these ‘dead’ projects.<\/p>\n
